New Students will attend an 8 week Introductory Kendo Class before becoming regular "intermediate" students. Beginner classes will be held on Friday Nights from 6:30-7:30 pm at the West YMCA on the following dates;

Available classes for beginners;
Jan 4- Feb 22, Friday nights 6:30-7:30pm
April 4- May 23, Friday nights 6:30-7:30pm
TBD, July - August , Friday nights 6:30-7:30pm
TBD, Sept - Nov , Friday nights 6:30-7:30pm

Cost for 8 week class is $40.00 per student.

This beginner class will introduce new students to the art of Japanese Fencing. It is hoped that they will join the club after this introduction class, and continue studying this very rewarding activity.

The schedule for the club is as follows; beginners are encouraged to attend all club activities so that they get to meet other members and see more kendo. But the focus will be each Friday. The 8 week schedule is shown below for reference.

• Introduction, orientation, and greetings. Intro to standing bow, targets holding shinai (mock sword).
• Basic footwork, swinging for men & kote targets.
• Review of basic swinging and footwork. Distance work. Kneeling bow.
• Fumi komi (foot stomping) and "ki ken tai ichi" with okuri ashi (sliding footwork).
• Review basics, add doh hit. Start attending advanced sessions.
• Intro to hitting practice. Review basic footwork.
• Uchi komi review (coordinating target hitting and footwork).
• Graduation to advanced class.
